People should eat real food – not the kind with ingredients that you can't pronounce. CR supports programs that get both children and adults growing, preserving, and cooking real food - at home, school, and at local farms. Our first program involves collaborations with Bread and Butter Farm, The Farm at South Village, and Rockville Farm Market to engage South Burlington youth in growing food for their schools.
Why are we doing this?
Current obesity rates among school-age children in the United States are higher than ever before. Since 1960, the number of American children and adolescents that are overweight has more than tripled. In Vermont the statistics are worse than the national average. Over a quarter of Vermont high school students are overweight or at risk of being overweight, and more than half of Vermont adults are overweight or obese (Vermont Obesity Programs 2007).
The key culprit? Highly processed foods. Children today eat so much processed food that many are unaware that carrots grow underground and tomatoes grow above ground! For the first time in the history of the United States, children today may have a lower life expectancy than their parents.
Food for Thought
"At home I serve the kind of food I know the story behind."
