Increasing Farm Production 33% to support local
Food Shelves with Fresh Produce and Products
The current coronavirus pandemic has caused Common Roots to increase our efforts to provide more food security by growing more certified organic food and plant starts on our Common Roots Farm at South Village for families and households to select with safe practices. Our nonprofit mission—now in our 11th year—is food education and access.
In 2020, Common Roots will grow 33% more organic food, including veggie and herb plant starts for the South Burlington Food Shelf.
The food will be grown at the Common Roots Farm at South Village and brought weekly to the SB Food Shelf, where our volunteers will have a station for our fresh produce and plant starts for Food Shelf participants to select.
Any farm-fresh food and plant starts not selected by 10:00 a.m. Saturday will go to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf (now called Feeding Chittenden).
In order to accomplish this, we are increasing our 2020 Food Shelf budget.
