Pickles and Pumpkins and Squash, Oh My!
By: Mollie Silver on August 29, 2010
I am Mollie Silver, the Common Roots Senior Intern for Bread and Butter farm, and soon to be one of the two Farm-to-School Coordinators with Kaitlyn Elias. I have been working on the Common Roots plot of land at Bread and Butter Farm this season.
The summer has certainly flown by. I’m reminded of the time of year as the pumpkins on the farm are beginning to ripen. There are rows of fruiting pumpkins, winter squash, and cucumbers on our half-acre plot!
I have been busy harvesting and canning cucumbers for *pickles* with the help of Roseanne. These jars will be available for sale in the coming weeks at various events (to be determined). We will keep you posted on when and where you can get your “Pickled Cukes for Common Roots”.
In the coming weeks, I will also be harvesting pumpkins (carving and pie) and winter squash (acorn, delicata, butternut, etc.) for sale to the public and for school lunches. It’s about time to embrace the coming autumn months!
I am so grateful to the many volunteers who have spent time spreading sheep manure and weeding this season. Feel free to come by the field at Bread and Butter Farm to check out the crops! The field is adjacent to the bakery parking lot. From there, you will also be able to see the high-tunnel hoophouse that is being built for growing greens in the fall and into the winter. We are helping the farmers at Bread and Butter Farm in the building process.
Stay tuned for more updates as we head into the new school year!
