Ania Safko

Board Member

Ania grew up in southern Ukraine, at a time when many urban families still tended allotment gardens and shared their harvest with neighbors. The warmth of these early experiences shaped her belief that access to land and nourishing food should be treated as a common good.

Ania was drawn to Common Roots by its holistic vision: to advance food equity and organic urban agriculture while helping students experience cooking and sharing meals as something joyful and convivial. She sees this work as part of a larger effort to rebuild the commons and decommodify land and food access.

Ania is a permaculture designer and a member of the Seedsong Gardening Collective, which cooperatively tends a plot of land at Tommy Thompson Community Garden. In her free time, she facilitates study groups on ecological economics and liberatory technology.

In her work at Mozilla, an open-source organization dedicated to keeping the internet open, private, and accessible to everyone, she helps a lean, mission-driven team building the Firefox browser prioritize the work that best serves its community.
