Common Roots is all about building and nurturing local community. We support programs, initiatves, and events that bring people together to discuss issues, lend a hand, and have fun.
Why are we doing this?
Social isolation in the United States is growing, according to a study that tracks two decades of American relationships. Yet, vital communities depend on maintaining healthy connections -- with each other and the land. Stories and traditions passed down from generation to generation have been replaced by ipods, cell phones, and twitter. While these new technologies have their place, they cannot replace the "real" interactions that link neighbors to each other and that link generation to generation.
Food for Thought
Supposing that the members of a local community wanted their community to cohere, to flourish, and to last ...What would they do?
"Always supply local needs first. (And only then think of exporting their products, first to nearby cities, and then to others.)"
