South Burlington Farmers Market History
The South Burlington Farmers Market was started six years ago by Healthy Living Market and Cafe . In 2012, Common Roots took over management of the Farmers Market from Healthy Living. Common Roots previously hosted the Farmers Market at the South Burlington High School, just outside the Community Library. The Farmers Market is now located at the University Mall, where it has expanded to include many new vendors! Common Roots schedules fun activities, educational opportunities, and local artist performances at the majority of the 20 Sunday markets. The Harvest Festival, our largest event, takes place this season on October 11. Come help us celebrate the season with music, lots of kids activities, guest tablers and vendors, and much more!
Latest Update from the Farmers Market:A Community Member's Perspective
Being a student myself, I know how boring weekends can get. By Sunday, my mom will be finished with all of her errands for the weekend, and I'll have all my homework done. The summer months in Vermont are always gorgeous, but leave me wanting to get out-and-about. A few years ago, my mom took me to the South Burlington Farmers Market, and instantly I was hooked.
The real question is why not go? The South Burlington Farmers Market is a great way to get involved with the greater Burlington community, participate in fun activities, talk with your neighbors, and learn where your food comes from. Plus, where else can you slack-line, listen to some great live music, shop for handcrafted beaded jewelry, and pick up fresh salad ingredients for dinner—all in the same place?
Day of Play
Even the description of Opening Day of the South Burlington Farmers Market sounds fun. Come with your friends and family on June 7 from 10:00am - 2:00pm. New location this year for Opening Day only: Dorset Park/Veterans Memorial Park. The Farmers Market will launch into the summer season in collaboration with the South Burlington Recreation and Parks Department. Join us for delicious local delights, as well as a bounce castle, book mobile, tennis demos, track and field fun, games, face painting, pre-school activities, a special Cub Scouts-sponsored bike rodeo from 12PM - 2PM, and much more!
How Can I Get Involved?
You can get involved in two ways: attending the Market and supporting vendors or becoming a vendor. Families and friends are encouraged to come and shop for healthy, local, and fresh foods. Opportunities to learn slack-lining and juggling are also available for the more coordinated (or determined) attendees! If you happen to have something special that you would like to sell and share, vendor applications are available. Sign up for the season or join the Market for specific dates.
POP Club (Power of Produce)
For children ages 5-12, becoming a POP Club member is a wonderful opportunity to increase exposure to healthy, local foods (and get some great produce!). Taste tests and food-focused lessons are offered each week at the Farmers Market. Plus, POP Club members receive a $3 token each week to spend at one of the Farmers Market produce stands. To join, just stop by the Farmers Market and visit the POP Club tent!
Vermont is filled to the brim with new and exciting activities each week. Add the South Burlington Farmers Market to your calendar!
